Resolution urges U.S. to withdraw from a North American union

daily herald
A House committee unanimously passed a joint resolution Tuesday that urges the president and Congress to withdraw from the Security and Prosperity Partnership of North America. The resolution, sponsored by Rep. Stephen Sandstrom, R-Orem, now moves to the House floor for a vote.

The SPP, while not an institution, is harshly criticized by some Utah groups. Resolution supporters told the committee Tuesday that the purpose of the SPP is to remove sovereignty from the United States and give it to a North American union, similar to the European Union. The SPP involves the United States, Mexico and Canada.

Wally McCormick, of the Utah Constitution Coalition and Utah Minuteman Project, said that the SPP will allow for "a 5-square-mile area, that is supposedly going to be owned by Mexico, within our own country, run by their officers, run by their soldiers."

McCormick called the SPP a scam. Referencing previous testimony, McCormick said that "The federal income tax is the second biggest scam perpetrated on the American people. I extend that further in saying that this scam about the SPP and what it is going to do to America may be the first biggest scam upon the American people."

According to the SPP Web site, it isn't a treaty or agreement. It is "a dialogue to increase security and enhance prosperity among the three countries."

"The SPP builds upon, but is separate from, our long-standing trade and economic relationships," says a statement on the SPP Web site.

The White House released a statement in September of last year highlighting achievements of the SPP. Among them was that "the SPP constitutes a 'comprehensive agenda for cooperation' while 'respecting the sovereignty and unique cultural and legal heritage' of each country."

The SPP also states one of its main goals as recognizing that "our security and our economic prosperity being mutually reinforcing."

The joint resolution addresses concerns of the SPP lacking congressional oversight and a highway planned for north-south travel from Texas.

The bill also expresses the concern of legislators that, "state and local governments throughout the United States would be negatively impacted by the SPP and North American Union process, such as the "open borders" vision of the SPP."

HJR 7, Resolution Urging United States Withdrawal from Security and Prosperity Partnership of North America, Rep. Stephen Sandstrom, R-Orem. This resolution of the Legislature urges the United States to withdraw from the Security and Prosperity Partnership of North America and any other activity which seeks to create a North American Union.

//////
I dont want to get my hopes up, but getting out of the SPP would be a huge victory. Still being realistic, we should know nothing will come of this. This talk about withdrawing from the SPP is just sweet talk. Do you really think our CFR run government will pull out of the north american SPP? If you think they would read this CFR report. If we want to get out of the North American Union, then first we need to get the CFR out of our government.

Ahmadinejad dismisses US 'threats'

Ahmadinejad dismisses US 'threats'

Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, Iran's president, has said that the US is incapable of inflicting damage on Iran, in an interview with state television on Tuesday.

The Iranian leader also said that "wise" Americans would not allow George Bush, the US president, to attack Iran, as a US Navy carrier group moved toward the country.

Ahmadinejad said: "They [the US] are not really in a position to carry out this action [of attacking Iran]. I believe there are many wise people in the United States who would not let it happen."

Nuclear ambitions

He said Washington had not campaigned further against Tehran, despite recent UN Security Council sanctions over Iran's nuclear programme.

He said: "In 2003, they openly threatened to attack Iran. Now they have indirectly made such threats"

Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, Iran's president

"US rhetoric against Iran has not increased.

"In 2003, they openly threatened to attack Iran. Now they have indirectly made such threats.

"They want to put us under pressure because they see the Iranian nation as an obstacle in the way of their goals in the region, but they are unable to do so."

The US is firmly against Iran's uranium enrichment, a process that can produce material for nuclear reactors or bombs.

Washington and its allies accuse Iran of seeking to build nuclear weapons. Iran says its nuclear programme is purely for civilian use.

US military mobilised

The US aircraft carrier USS John C Stennis has been sent to the Gulf as part of a buildup of forces that Robert Gates, the US defence secretary, hopes will show Iran that US military power is undiminished.

Ahmadinejad has recently faced criticism in the local press and has been accused of stirring opposition to Iran by taking a hard-line on the nuclear dispute.

"Iran is not seeking confrontation with anybody," he told interviewers.
Ahmadinejad appeared indifferent to the prospect of a US military strike against Iran, which has been mooted as a response to its nuclear programme.

"The United States is unable to inflict serious damage on Iran," he said.

Ahmadinejad has recently been accused of failing to improve Iran's economy. He blamed inflation on the economic structure he inherited when he took office in 2005.

He also said the rise in prices was partly due to the early arrival of winter and what he called fabricated reports in the media.

Wed Jan 24, 2007 8:25 AM ET

PHOENIX (Reuters) - U.S. immigration police have rounded up hundreds of criminal aliens in southern California, as part of one of their largest ever roundups of foreign lawbreakers and immigration violators, police said on Tuesday.

Immigration and Customs Enforcement spokeswoman Virginia Kice said the week-long sweep identified 423 criminal aliens due for release from jails across five counties in the Los Angeles area, and took them into custody.

The operation also led to the arrest of 338 undocumented immigrants in the area, more than 150 of whom were classed as "immigration fugitives" -- foreign nationals who ignored final deportation orders.

"It is one of the largest crackdowns on criminal aliens ever carried out in the United States," Kice told Reuters in a telephone interview.

"The goal of our enforcement efforts is two-fold. First, it's about restoring integrity to our nation's immigration system. Second, it's about safeguarding our communities from those who brazenly disregard our laws," she added.

Those arrested in the swoop have all either been removed from the United States already or face deportation.

The sweep came as part of "Operation Return to Sender," a nationwide initiative targeting criminal aliens, foreign nationals dodging deportation orders and other immigration violators.

ICE said most of those detained came from Mexico, although the sweep also netted nationals from 14 countries including Ukraine, India, Japan, Poland and Trinidad.

The operation is the latest in a series of raids in the interior of the United States, where immigration enforcement has been stepped up in recent months.

In December, ICE agents arrested more than 1,300 mostly Mexican workers in coordinated swoops on Swift & Co. meat processing plants in six states.

India, Russia plan joint production of fighter aircraft

M&C
New Delhi - India and Russia have agreed to begin joint production of a multi-role transport plane and a similar agreement on fifth generation fighter aircraft was likely soon, Russian Defence Minister Sergei Ivanov said at a joint press conference with his Indian counterpart AK Anthony in New Delhi Wednesday.

The deal on the multi-role transport plane is likely to be signed during the visit of Russian President Vladimir Putin to India on Friday, defence sources said.

Ivanov, who began the day by laying a wreath at the memorial to the forgotten soldier in the heart of the Indian capital, held wide-ranging talks with Anthony on Indo-Russian defence cooperation.

He is also scheduled to meet India's national security advisor MK Narayanan, Foreign Minister Pranab Mukherjee and Prime Minister Manmohan Singh.

India, which has the world's third largest armed force with about 1.3 million serving personnel, is currently in the process of upgrading its long-neglected defence capabilities.

There are plans to buy advanced fighter jets, submarines, surveillance equipment and other armaments.

Defence ties between Russia and India date back to the Soviet era and about 70 per cent of India's military hardware is of Soviet or Russian make.

The high-level Russian visits by Ivanov and Putin, who is to be acompanied by a large business delegation, are being seen as attempts to secure Moscow's position as India's primary military equipment supplier, especially in the context of the latter's increasing closeness to the United States.

An agreement on joint production of MiG-29 aircraft engines by India's state-run Hindustan Aeronautics Limited is expected to be among the defence deals to be signed during Putin's visit. The Russian-designed MiG-29 forms the bulk of India's fighter fleet.

India is keen to move away from its buyer-seller relationship with Russia on defence hardware and move into more efforts at joint production like that of the Brahmos cruise missile, the Indian prime minister was quoted as saying.

'We need to work on further strengthening the linkages between Indian requirements and the Russian defence industry in the longer term,' Singh said in an interview to a Russian daily on the eve of Putin's visit, PTI news agency reported.

'Defence cooperation has provided a vital element of trust and stability and a solid foundation to our bilateral ties,' he said, adding that India had played a role in easing a difficult situation for Russia's defence industry after the collapse of the Soviet Union, with orders worth billions of dollars.

Ivanov, who is also Russia's deputy prime minister, said in the southern Indian city of Bangalore Tuesday that Russia would submit its new MiG-35 in a tender for 126 light fighter aircraft for the Indian air force, PTI news agency reported.

The air force plans to float the tender soon in an attempt to upgrade its ageing fleet of fighters, comprising largely of Russian-made MiG 29s and British Jaguars. The MiG-35 is an advanced version of the MiG-29.

Bids for the aircraft are also expected from Lockheed Martin and Boeing companies of the United States, Dassault of France, Gripen-SAAB of Sweden and the Eurofighter consortium, sources said.

3 Killed, Scores Hurt in Lebanon Clashes

washingtonpost(AP)
BEIRUT, Lebanon -- Hezbollah-led protesters burned tires and cars and clashed with government supporters Tuesday, paralyzing Beirut and areas across Lebanon in the worst violence yet in the pro-Iranian group's campaign to topple U.S.-backed Prime Minister Fuad Saniora.

At least three people were killed and dozens injured as the two camps battled each other around street barricades with stone-throwing and in some cases gunfire. Black smoke poured into the sky over Beirut from burning roadblocks.

A Lebanese opposition member is seen in front of burning tires on a roadblock in Beirut, Lebanon, on Tuesday, Jan. 23, 2007. A Lebanese opposition member is seen in front of burning tires on a roadblock in Beirut, Lebanon, on Tuesday, Jan. 23, 2007. Opposition protesters paralyzed Lebanon Tuesday by burning tires and cars at major thoroughfares in the capital and its approaches to enforce a general strike that aims to topple the government.

The fighting quickly took on a dangerous sectarian tone in a country whose divided communities fought a bloody 1975-1990 civil war. Gunmen from neighboring districts in the northern city of Tripoli _ one largely Sunni Muslim, the other largely Alawites, a Shiite Muslim offshoot _ fought each other, causing two of the fatalities.

The day gave a frightening glimpse of how quickly the confrontation between Saniora's government and the Iranian-backed Hezbollah and its allies could spiral out of control, enflame tensions among Sunnis, Shiites and Christians and throw Lebanon into deeper turmoil.

In the evening, the opposition announced it would call off the roadblocks and the nationwide general strike that sparked the unrest, saying it had delivered a warning to the government. But it threatened more protests.

Opposition supporters began withdrawing from their street blockades, leaving behind burning tires, concrete blocks and debris. At one abandoned roadblock in the north of Beirut, a fire engine extinguished the burning tires.

Suleiman Franjieh, a Christian opposition leader, told Hezbollah's Al-Manar TV the next steps "will be nothing compared to what we saw today" if the government does not respond to the opposition's demands.

The Hezbollah-led opposition is growing increasingly frustrated after two months of sit-in protests outside Saniora's offices in downtown Beirut failed to force him to step down or form a new government giving the opposition more power.

Saniora vowed not to give in, saying in a televised address: "We will stand together against intimidation and to confront sedition."

But he repeated his willingness to discuss a political solution to the impasse and called for a special session of Parliament.

The violence called into question whether Saniora will be able to attend a conference of donor nations in Paris on Thursday aimed at raising billions in aid for rebuilding the devastation wreaked on Lebanon by last summer's Israel-Hezbollah war.

Saniora has been expected to attend and the suspension of the strike increased the likelihood. But the government has not made a formal announcement about his travel plans.

Israeli President in sex scandal refuses to quit

SMH.com
THE Israeli President, Moshe Katsav, was expected to stand aside temporarily following a decision to prosecute him on charges including rape, indecent acts and sexual harassment involving four former female employees.

But yesterday Mr Katsav was resisting widespread calls for him to resign as head of state, with his lawyers saying he will fight to establish his innocence. If convicted on the rape charge he faces a maximum sentence of 16 years in prison.

The Attorney-General, Menachem Mazuz, formally announced on Tuesday that he intends to prosecute the 61-year-old former Likud minister on charges of raping one young former employee and of indecent assault and sexual harassment in relation to her and three others.

The woman who was allegedly raped worked in Mr Katsav's office when he was tourism minister in 1998 and 1999, while the other three were employed in the president's office. Similar complaints from another woman were dropped for lack of evidence, while the statute of limitations was judged to apply to allegations made by five others.

It was reported yesterday that details of these five cases could still be introduced in court if prosecutors want to establish Mr Katsav's alleged modus operandi.

Mr Katsav also faces preliminary charges of fraud, illegal wire-tapping and attempting to interfere with an investigation.

His lawyers have said they hope to persuade Mr Mazuz to drop all the charges at a preliminary hearing due in the next three months.

The Katsav affair is the most high-profile in a series of scandals involving the Israeli political establishment. The former justice minister, Haim Ramon, is facing trial for harassing a young female soldier, and several leading politicians - notably the Prime Minister, Ehud Olmert - are being investigated for financial offences or influence-peddling.

The Katsav case came to light six months ago, when the President complained to police that one of his employees was trying to blackmail him with false allegations of sexual misconduct. Subsequent interviews with former employees uncovered a string of complaints against Mr Katsav, portraying him as a sexual predator.

Neocons Baiting Iran With Second Strike Group

infowars
Waiting with anticipation for any excuse to pounce
A top US diplomat has confirmed that a second U.S. aircraft carrier strike group has been deployed to the Gulf in order to send a clear signal to Iran that they will be crushed if they continue to defy the wishes of the US government by enriching uranium.

"The Middle East isn't a region to be dominated by Iran. The Gulf isn't a body of water to be controlled by Iran. That's why we've seen the United States station two carrier battle groups in the region," Nicholas Burns, U.S. undersecretary of state for political affairs, said in an address to the Dubai-based Gulf Research Center, an influential think-tank, as reported by the AP .

"Iran is going to have to understand that the United States will protect its interests if Iran seeks to confront us," Burns continued.

Yes, it is of course Iran who are doing the confronting, not the country that has deployed Patriot anti-missile missiles, aircraft carriers, and cruise-missile-firing ships, nor the country that has already allegedly attempted to engage in pre-emptive strikes upon Iran.

Despite reports that Iran is willing to conduct talks, the White House is still refusing to even entertain the idea, sticking to the "we don't converse with evil" mantra, deciding instead to deploy war cruisers.

The likelihood of some kind of conflict is looking increasingly probable with arch neocons such as Richard Perle preaching that the President would have no hesitation in attacking Iran.

Discussing a possible US involvement in a strike on Iran , Perle said at a conference in Israel: "Would this president do it? I think that until the day he leaves office, this is a president that, if he is told, 'Mr. President, you are at the point of no return,' I have very little doubt that this president would order the necessary military action."

Perle began his speech by saying it wasn't clear whether "it's our time or Iran's that is over."

With Bush's approval rating at an all time low of 28% now, and the current situation in Iraq, it is clear he has nothing left to lose now and indeed may be "at the point of no return" as far as the American people are concerned.

Interestingly Bilderberg shill John Edwards was also in attendance at the same conference as Perle in Herzliya, Israel, where he also today told the watching Israeli delegates that Iran must be stopped at all costs.

With a second strike group deployed it does seem like the neocon warmongers are expecting something to happen very soon.

Last week, a former commander of the Russian Black Sea Fleet, Admiral Eduard Baltin , revealed that he believes a missile attack on the Iranians is imminent, while Republican Congressman and 2008 Presidential candidate Ron Paul fears a staged Gulf of Tonkin style incident may be used to provoke air strikes on Iran.

Indeed there were numerous strange reports of incidents occurring in the Gulf from rumours of nonexistent clashes between Iranian and American battleships to those of missile strikes on U.S. vessels.

Meanwhile the AP and Reuters have been filing misleading reports stating that Iran has barred IAEA inspectors, an allegation that turns out to be inaccurate according to the IAEA themselves who today stated:

"It should be noted however, that there are a sufficient number of inspectors designated for Iran and the IAEA is able to perform its inspection activities in accordance with Iran's Comprehensive Safeguards Agreement."

Iran has also begun massing troops along its borders with north Iraq, in addition to launching missile war games , while top a Middle East analyst and former State Department official has gone public with claims that U.S. plans envision a broad attack on Iran, rather than surgical strikes, as part of a war that likely would further destabilize the Middle East for years.

Chinese Regime Admits To Organ Harvesting From Prisoners

epochtimes
CHINA—In the middle of January, 2007, the BBC Chinese website published an interview regarding organ harvesting in China. For the first time, China's Ministry of Health spokesman Mao Qunan admitted to the practice of organ harvesting from executed prisoners in China, which he had publicly denied before. However, Mao evaded key evidences of organ harvesting from Falun Gong practitioners and denied that accusation.

This interview was conducted by BBC senior reporter Hua Ying. An Epoch Times journalist also did an interview with Dr. Wang Wenyi, who protested at the White House during communist regime leader Hu Jintao's visit to the United States on April 20, 2006 regarding the BBC's interview

The Chinese regime has had a long history of harvesting organs from executed prisoners, and an equally long history of denying this practice. In November of 2005, the regime's Deputy Minister of Ministry of Public Health, Huang Jiefu, admitted to using organs taken from executed prisoners, at an international conference in Manila.

Later in April 2006, Mao stated that organs from executed prisoners constituted a very small portion of organs used in China's organ transplant industry.

In November 2006, Minister Huang again admitted in a conference in Guangzhou that most of the organs used in transplants, except for a small portion from organ donors in traffic accidents, came from executed prisoners. His statement was quoted by newspapers in China.

When the reporter, Hua Ying, questioned Mao on the above statements, he reluctantly answered: "I don't have anything to add to this question' you have explained it very clearly."

In the whole interview, Mao kept denying the existence of organ harvesting from Falun Gong practitioners in China and denied the necessity for international organizations going into China for a thorough and independent investigation.

Regarding Mao's statement, Dr. Wang Wenyi said: "Under pressure from international societies, the regime admitted to harvesting organs from executed prisoners in order to shift attention away from the harvesting of organs from Falun Gong practitioners. The regime continues to cover up the truth, because Mao's admission to harvesting organs from executed prisoners does not explain the widespread and unusual expediency of organ matching for transplants in Mainland hospitals."

Wang further explains that after the Mainland hospital receives payment, the transplant surgery could be performed in as soon as three days to a week. This means that a few days later, there would be a "prisoner" not only with the same blood type and matching tissue as the patient (who paid an enormous fee for the procedure,) but also this criminal would just happen to be scheduled for execution at that time, and would also be willing to donate his organs.

In the BBC program, Hua Ying also interviewed vice-chairman of the China Medical Organ Transplant Association Shi Bingyi. Shi denied that he had made the statement that "China had conducted over 90,000 organ transplants in total up to now (beginning of 2006;) there were nearly 10,000 kidney transplants and nearly 4,000 liver transplants performed in last year (2005) alone." This statement was published in Chinese by Health Paper Net (2006-03-02)—the official media outlet of the Ministry of Public Health. The Web page of this report has been deleted from its original site but can still be traced back in Internet archives.

In the Report Into Allegations Of Organ Harvesting Of Falun Gong Practitioners In China , the authors David Matas and David Kilgour used the above information to conclude that "the source for 41,500 transplants for the six-year period from 2000 to 2005 is unexplained" and "the allegation of organ harvesting from Falun Gong practitioners provides an answer."

Shi also denied knowledge of the number of organ transplants performed in China, and refused to give an estimated number. He accused the Health Paper Net of making a false report. When reporter Hua Ying challenged Shi and Mao that the Health Paper was actually the official paper for the Chinese Ministry of Health, both of them made no comments.

Regarding Shi's replies, Dr Wang Wenyi said, "It is a joke that the vice-chairman of China Medical Organ Transplant Association does not know the figures for China organ transplants. I have visited officials from the health departments of more than 30 counties and districts. All of them are very clearly aware of the transplant data in their areas. How is it possible that Shi "does not know" the most basic data for total transplants carried out in a year? The only explanation is that there are serious issues behind the data that he does not dare to admit."

Contradictory Statements From the Chinese Communist Regime About the Allegations of Organ Harvesting in China

On November 7-9, 2005, at the WHO conference in Manila, Deputy Minister of Public Health, Huang Jiefu, admitted that most of the donors used in organ transplant in China are from executed prisoners.

In March, 2006, the spokesperson for China's Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Qin Gang, said at a press conference, "It is a complete lie that China harvests organs from executed prisoners for transplant."

On April 10, 2006, in reply to reporter's questions, Mao Qunan, the spokesperson for the Ministry of Public Health, denied that China harvests the organs of executed prisoners for transplants. He said that most of the transplant organs came from voluntary donations from Chinese citizens.

On October 10, 2006, in response to BBC reporter Rupert Wingfield-Hayes' article "Organ sales 'thriving' in China," China's Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokeman Qin Gang said, "Some foreign media fabricate fake news when reporting on organ transplant in China to attack China's legal system."

On November, 2006, Huang Jiefu, the vice-minister of Ministry of Public Health, again admitted at a conference held in Guangzhou that most of the organs used in transplants in China are from executed prisoners.

Hillary Took Donations From Cocaine Smuggler

WRH
Hillary for President?

Soon after Camp Casey in August, 05, I was meeting with some Hollywood people who pretended that they supported me, but really were big money donors and supporters of Hillary. I was told that the Senator was really against the war, but she was waiting for the politically correct time to come out against it. I was told that she was the best hope for the Democrats in 2008, and I should give her a break.

I don’t know who Mr. and Mrs. Hollywood and Mr. Hollywood Got Rocks thought that they were talking to. My son was used as a “soldier of Christ” in BushCo’s crusade against the world and a political pawn in such pro-war Democrat’s moves to the White House. I was disgusted and noted this in many blogs that I wrote at the time.
My fellow Americans, please study the following photo.

The above photo was taken in front of the White House Christmas tree with Hillary and Clinton campaign donor Jorge Cabreras. Jorge is a convicted drug smuggler and friend of Fidel Castro. According to the New York Times, April 4, 1997, Jorge was solicited for his donation by a Democratic operative in the lobby of a hotel in Havana! The $20,000 check to the Clinton campaign came from an account linked to cocaine money. At the time the above photo was taken, Jorge had two felony convictions, but the Secret Service cleared him to enter the White House anyway.

Remember what I said about America needing a President who places America first, second, and third.

NATO’s Hidden Terrorism

global research
Daniele Ganser, professor of contemporary history at Bale University, and chairman of ASPO - Switzerland, published a landmark book about “NATO’s Secret Armies.”According to him, during the last 50 years the United States have organized bombings in Western Europe that they have falsely attributed to the left and the extreme left with the purpose of discrediting them in the eyes of their voters. This strategy is still present today, inspiring fear for the Islam and justifying wars on oil.

Silvia Cattori: Your book about NATO’s Secret Armies [1] explains that the strategy of tension [2] and the False Flag terrorism [3] imply great dangers. It teaches us how NATO - together with the intelligence services or the West European countries and the Pentagon - utilised secret armies during the Cold War, hired spies among the extreme right wing, and organized terrorist acts for which they blamed the left. Becoming aware of this, we can wonder about what is likely to happen today behind our back.

Daniele Ganser: It is extremely important to understand what the strategy of tension truly represents the way it works nowadays. This can help us clarify the present and to see more clearly to what extent it is still in action. Only a few people know what the expression ’strategy of tension’ means. It is very important to talk about it, to explain it. It is a tactic that involves carrying out criminal acts and attributing them to someone else. By the term ’tension’, we mean emotional tension, all that which creates a feeling of tension. By ’strategy’ we make reference to that which increases people’s fear in regard to a determined group. These secret structures of NATO had been equipped, financed and trained by the CIA, in coordination with the M16 (the British secret service), to fight against the Army of the Soviet Union in a case of war, but also according to the information to which he have access today, to commit terrorist acts in several countries [4]. That is how, since the 70s, the Italian secret services have been using these armies to foment terrorist attacks, with the purpose of causing fear among the population, and later, to accuse the communists of being the authors. The strategy of tension was designed to serve the purpose or discrediting, weakening and stopping communism from reaching executive power.

Silvia Cattori: To learn what it means is one thing. But it is still difficult to believe that our government could have let NATO, the West European intelligence agencies and the CIA act in such a way that could threaten their own citizens’ security!

Daniele Ganser: NATO was at the core of this clandestine network linked to terror; the Clandestine Planning Committee (CPC) and the Allied Clandestine Committee (ACC) were two substructures of the Atlantic Alliance, and they are clearly identified today. But, now that this has been established, it is still hard to know who was doing what. There are not any documents proving who was at the head, who organized the strategy of tension, how NATO, the West European intelligence services, the CIA, M16, and the hired terrorists among the extreme right, distributed each other’s roles. The only certainty that we have is that there was, inside these clandestine structures, some elements that used the strategy of tension. The terrorists from the extreme right have explained in their statements that it was NATO’s secret services that had supported them in this clandestine war. But when we ask for explanations from some members of the CIA or NATO - which I have done for many years - they limit themselves to say that it could be possible that a few criminal elements might have managed to avoid control.

Silvia Cattori: Were these secret armies active in every Western European country?

Daniele Ganser: In my research, I put forward evidence that these secret armies not only existed in Italy, but also in all Western Europe: in France, Belgium, The Netherlands, Norway, Denmark, Sweden, Finland, Turkey, Spain, Portugal, Austria, Switzerland, Greece, Luxembourg and Germany. In the beginning, we thought that there existed only one guerrilla-structured organization, and therefore, that all these secret armies had participated in the strategy of tension, and therefore, in terrorist acts. However, it is important to know that not all these secret armies have been involved in attacks, and to understand what differentiated them. What appears to be clear today, is that NATO’s clandestine structures, usually called ’Stay Behind groups’ [5], were created in the beginning to act as a guerrilla in case of an occupation of Western Europe by the Soviet Union. The United States stated that the guerrilla networks were necessary to overcome the lack of preparedness of the countries attacked by Germany. Several of the countries that were occupied by the Germans, like Norway, wanted to learn the lessons of their incapacity to resist the occupier, and they said to themselves that, in case of a new occupation, they had to be better prepared, to have another option at hand and to count with a secret army in case that the official one were to be defeated. Inside these secret armies, there were honest people, sincere patriots, who only wanted to defend their countries from an occupation.

Silvia Cattori: If I understand well, these Stay Behind groups, whose original goal was to be prepared in case of a Soviet invasion, have been deviated from that goal and were reorganised to defeat the left. From that, it is difficult to understand why the left parties have not investigated this or denounced this earlier.

Daniele Ganser: When we take the case of Italy, it appears that, every time that the communist party has interviewed the government to find an explanation about the secret army that was operating in this country under the coded name of Gladio [6], there was never any answer, under the pretext that it was a ’state secret’. It wasn’t until 1990 that Giulio Andreotti [7] recognised the existence of Gladio and its direct links with NATO, the CIA, and M16 [8]. _ It is also during that time that the judge Felice Casson was able to prove that the true author of the bombing in Peteano in 1972, that had shocked Italy, and that had been attributed up to that moment to the extreme left militants, was Vincenzo Vinciguerra, linked to ’Ordine Nuovo’, a group of the extreme right wing. Vinciguerra avoided blame for the bombing in Peteano with the help of the Italian secret services. Vinciguerra also spoke about the existence of this secret army, Gladio. He explained that, during the Cold War, these clandestine acts had caused the death of women and children [9]. He stated as well that this secret army controlled by NATO, had branches all around Europe. When this information was released, there was a political crisis in Italy. And it is thanks to the investigations of the judge Felice Casson that we got to know about NATO’s secret armies.

In Germany, when in 1990 the SPDs (German Social Democrat Partisans) became aware that in their country - as well as in all the other European countries - there was a secret army, and that this structure was linked to the German secret services, they loudly denounced it as a scandal and accused the Christian democratic Party (CDU). This party reacted by saying: “If you accuse us, we are going to say that, you too, together with Willy Brandt, you have been involved in this conspiracy”. This happened at the same time as the first elections of the reunified Germany, which the SPD hoped to win. The leaders of the SPD understood that that was not a good electoral subject; in the end, the story was twisted in such a way as to make the existence of these secret armies seem justified. In the European Parliament, in November 1990, many members exclaimed that the existence of such clandestine armies could not be tolerated and that the European people needed to know the true origin of terrorist acts and that an inquiry was needed. Therefore, the European Parliament wrote a complaint to NATO and to president George Bush Senior. But nothing was done. It is only in Italy, Belgium and Switzerland that there have been public queries. And they are the only three countries that have set some order in this subject, and that have published a report about their secret armies.

Silvia Cattori: What about today ? Are these secret armies still active? Is it possible that there exist secret national structures which escape the control of each State?

Daniele Ganser: For a historian, it is difficult to answer that question. We haven’t got an official report of each country. In my books, I analyse some facts that I can prove. Concerning Italy, there is a report stating that the secret army Gladio has been destroyed. About the existence of the secret army P26 in Switzerland, a report was also issued by the Parliament, in November 1990. Therefore, these clandestine armies, which had stocked explosives in hidden places everywhere in Switzerland, have been dissolved. But in the other countries, nothing was done. In France, while president François Mitterrand stated that all that belonged to the past, we discovered later that these secret structures had always been present when Giulio Andreotti suggested that the French president was lying: “You say that the secret armies do not exist anymore; but, during 1990’s secret meeting in the autumn, you, the French, were also present; don’t say that this doesn’t exist anymore.” Mitterrand became quite angry with this Andreotti because, after this revelation, he was forced to rectify his statement. Later, the head of the French secret services, admiral Pierre Lacoste, confirmed that these secret armies existed in France as well, and that France had also been involved in terrorist attacks. [10]. It is therefore difficult to say whether all this has been solved or not. And, even if the Gladio structures have been dissolved, new armies might have been created, still utilizing this technique of the strategy of tension and the False flags.

Silvia Cattori: Can we speculate that, after the fall of the USSR, the United States and NATO have continued developing the strategy of tension and of the false flags in other fronts?

Daniele Ganser: My research is based in the period of the Cold War in Europe. But it is known that there have also been false flags in other places, where the States’ responsibility was proved. For example: the Iran bombings in 1953, for which the communist Iranians were blamed at first. So it happened that the CIA and the Mi6 had used some agents provocateurs to orchestrate the overthrow of Mohammed Mossadegh’s administration, within the framework of the war, to control the oil. Another example: the bombings in Egypt, in 1954, for which the Muslims were accused first. It was proved later that, in what was called the Lavon affair [11], it was the agents of Mossad who had been the perpetrators. This time, it was for Israel to stop the British troops from leaving Egypt, to make them stay there, and also to ensure the protection of Israel. Therefore, we have examples in history showing that the strategy of tension and the false flags have been used by the US, Great Britain and Israel. Given that throughout their history other countries have also used the same strategy, the research must continue in these fields.

Silvia Cattori: These clandestine structures of NATO, created after the Second World War, to supply the European countries with a guerrilla capable of resisting the Soviet invasion, ended up serving nothing but to build criminal operations against the European Citizens? Everything leads to the thought that the United States have another purpose!

Daniele Ganser: You are right in raising this question. The United States were interested in the political control. This political control is an essential element of Washington and London’s strategy. General Geraldo Serravalle, at the head of Gladio, the Italian network Stay-behind, gives an example of this in his book. He tells us that he understood that the United States were not interested in the preparation of the guerrillas against an eventual Soviet invasion, when he saw that, what interested the CIA agents who went to the training exercises of the secret army that he was leading, was to make sure that the army worked, could control the communist militants. Their fear was that the communists took the power in countries such a Greece, Italy and France. Therefore, the strategy of tension was meant to serve that purpose: to orient and influence the politics of certain countries of Western Europe.

Silvia Cattori: You have talked about an important emotional factor in the strategy of tension. Therefore, the terror, whose origin is vague, uncertain, the fear that it causes, all that helps to manipulate the public opinion. Are we not assisting today to the same kind of procedure? Yesterday, we fuelled the fear of communism, today aren’t we fuelling the fear of Islam?

Daniele Ganser: Yes, there is a very clear parallel. During the planning of the war in Iraq, it was said that Saddam Hussein had biological weapons in his possession, that there was a link between Iraq and the Al-Qaeda terrorists. But none of that turned out to be true. By means of these lies, it was intended to make people believe that Muslims wanted to spread terrorism all around, and that this war was necessary to fight against terror. However, the true reason for this war is the control of energy resources. This is due to the fact that the geology, the richness in gas and oil, are concentrated in the Muslim countries. He who wants to monopolize them, must hide behind this type of manipulations. We cannot say that there is not a lot of oil left because the global production - the ’peak oil’ [12] - is going to arrive probably before 2020, and that therefore oil must be taken from Iraq, because people would say that children must not be killed to obtain oil. And they are right. They can’t be told, either, that in the Caspian Sea there are huge reserves and that there is a plan to create a pipeline that would go to the Indian Ocean but, given that it’s is not allowed to go through the South of Iran or the North of Russia, it must pass through the East, Turkmenistan and Afghanistan, and therefore, this country must be under control. That is why Muslims are labelled as “terrorists”. It is all a big lie, but if it is repeated a thousand times that Muslims are “terrorists”, people will end up believing it and thinking that the wars against Muslims are useful; and to forget that there are several types of terrorism, that violence is not necessarily a feature of Islam.

Silvia Cattori: So, these clandestine structures might have well been dissolved, but the strategy of tension continues?

Daniele Ganser: Exactly. The structures might have been dissolved, and other ones could have been formed. It is important to explain how, in the strategy of tension, the tactic and manipulation work. None of that is legal. But, for the governments, it is easier to manipulate people than to tell them that they are trying to get hold of somebody else’s oil. Nevertheless, not all these attacks arise from the strategy of tension. But it is difficult to know which ones are the manipulated attacks. Even those who know the amount of attacks that have been manipulated by the governments to discredit a political enemy, can be confronted by a psychological obstacle. After every bombing, people are afraid, they feel confused. It is very difficult to accept the idea that the strategy of tension, the strategy of false flag, is a reality. It is easier to accept the manipulation and to say: “I have kept informed for 30 years, and I have never heard about these criminal armies. The Muslims are attacking us; this is why we fight against them.”

Silvia Cattori: Since 2001, the European Union has created anti-terrorist measures. Later, is has been seen that these measures have allowed the CIA to kidnap people, to move them to secrete places and torture them. Have the European States become a sort of hostages to their submission to the United States?

Daniele Ganser: The European countries have had quite a weak attitude concerning the United States after the attacks on September 11th, 2001. After having confirmed that the secret prisons were illegal, they let them continue. The same happened with the prisoners in Guantanamo. Many voices stood up in Europe to say: “The prisoners cannot be deprived of a lawyer or defence.” When Mrs. Angela Merkel mentioned this question, the United States clearly suggested that Germany was a little bit involved in Iraq, that its secret services had contributed to prepare this war, and therefore they must shut up.

Silvia Cattori: Within this context, where there are still many unclear areas, what type of security can NATO give to the peoples it is supposed to protect if it allows the secret services to manipulate in this way?

Daniele Ganser:Concerning the terrorist attacks carried out by the secret armies of the network Gladio during the Cold War, it is important that we are able to determine clearly which is the real implication of NATO in this, to know what really happened. Is this about isolated acts secretly organised by NATO? Until this day, NATO refuses to talk about the strategy of tension and terrorism during the Cold War. NATO refuses all questions related to Gladio. Today, NATO is used as an offensive army, even though this organization was not created to play that role. It was activated in that sense on September 12th 2001, immediately after the attacks in New York. NATO’s leaders affirm that the reason for their involvement in the war against the Afghans is to fight against terrorism. However, NATO is in danger of losing that war. Therefore, when that happens they will be a big crisis, a debate. And this will allow us to know whether NATO is really fighting a war against terrorism, or if it is trying to create an analogous situation to that of the Cold War with the secret army Gladio, where she had a link to terror. The next few years will tell us if NATO has acted outside the mission that was accorded to it: to defend the European countries and the Unites States in case of Soviet invasion, an event that has never occurred. NATO was not funded to take over the oil and gas of the Muslim countries.

Silvia Cattori: We could understand that Israel, who is interested in widening the conflicts in the Arabic and Muslim countries, encourages the United States in that direction. But, we cannot see what it is that interests the European countries and that makes them engage their troops in the wars decided by the Pentagon, as was the case in Afghanistan.

Daniele Ganser: I think that Europe is confused. The United States are in a strong position, and the Europeans have a tendency to think that the best thing is to collaborate with the strongest one. But we would have to think about this more thoroughly. The European politicians give in easily to the pressure put by the US, who is always asking for more troops in this or that front. The more the European countries give in, the more they subordinate, and the more they will find themselves confronted to bigger and bigger problems. In Afghanistan the Germans and the British are under the command of the American army. Strategically, it is not an interesting position for these countries. Now, the US has asked the Germans to engage their soldiers in the South of Afghanistan as well, in the areas were the battle is the hardest. If the Germans accept, they take the risk of being massacred by the Afghan forces which refuse the presence of any king of occupier. _ Germany should ask itself seriously whether she should not rather withdraw their 3000 soldiers from Afghanistan. But, for the Germans, to disobey the US’ orders, to which they are a bit like lieges, it is a very hard step to make.

Silvia Cattori: How much do our current government know today about the strategy of tension ? Can they just let the war-doers foment coups d’état, kidnap and torture people without reacting? Have they any means to stop these criminal activities?

Daniele Ganser: I do not know. As an historian, I observe and take notes. As a political adviser, I always say that one must never give in to the manipulations that try to induce fear and to make people believe that the “terrorists” are always the Muslims; I say that this is about a struggle for controlling the energy resources; that some means of surviving the lack of energy must be found without needing to go to a militarization. Problems cannot be solved in this way; they only become worse.

Silvia Cattori: When we observe the demonisation of the Arabs and Muslims in the conflict between Israel and Palestine, we might think that this does not have anything to do with the oil.

Daniele Ganser: No. In this case not. But, in the US perspective, it is definitely about taking control of the energy reserves of the Eurasian block that is situated in a ’strategic ellipse’ that goes from Azerbaijan to Saudi Arabia, Iraq, Kuwait and the Persian Gulf, passing through Turkmenistan and Kazakhstan. It is precisely over there, in that region where this false war ’against terrorism’ is taking place, that the biggest oil and gas reserves are concentrated. In my opinion, it is not about anything else but a geo-strategic game inside which the European Union can do nothing but lose. Because, if the US takes hold of the resources, and the energy crisis becomes worse, it will tell them: “You want gas, you want oil. Very well, in exchange we want this and that.” The US is not going to give the oil and gas for free to the European countries. A few people know that the “peak oil”, the maximum production of oil in Europe - the production to Norway and Great Britain - is declining. The day when people will realise that these wars ’against terrorism’ are manipulated, and that the accusations against the Muslims are, among other things, propaganda, they are going to be surprised. The European countries must wake up and understand once and for all how the strategy of tension works. And they must also learn to say “no” to the US. Moreover, in the US also, there are many people who do not want this militarizing of the international relationships.

Silvia Cattori: You have also done some research on the attacks that took place in September 11th 2001 and you have signed a book [13] jointly with other intellectuals who worry about the inconsistencies and contradictions of the official version of these events, as well as the conclusions of the commission of survey ordered by Mr. Bush. Do you not fear being accused of being a “conspiracy theorist”?

Daniele Ganser: My students and other people have always asked me : if this “war against terrorism” concerns indeed the oil and gas, the 911 attacks have also been manipulated, haven’t they? Or is it a coincidence that Osama Ben Laden’s Muslims have struck exactly at the precise moment that the occidental countries were starting to understand that an oil crisis was announcing itself? Therefore, I became interested in what had been written about September 11th and I also studied the official report that was presented in 2004. When we dig into this subject, we realize from the start that there is a big worldwide debate around what really happened on 911. The information that we have is not very precise. What makes one question this 600 page report is that the third tower that collapsed on that day is not even mentioned. The commission only talks about the collapsing of two towers, the Twin Towers. But there is a third 170 meters high tower that collapsed too; the WTC 7 tower. A small fire is mentioned concerning it. I have talked to professors who know very well the building structures; they say that a small fire cannot destroy such a big structure. The official story of 911 and the commission’s conclusions, are not reliable. This lack of clarity puts the researchers in a difficult situation. The confusion predominated as well about what really happened at the Pentagon. In the pictures that we have, it is very difficult to see a plane. We cannot see how a plane would have fallen there.

Silvia Cattori: The Venezuelan Government has asked the US for further explanations to clarify the origin of the attacks. Would this not be the example to follow?

Daniele Ganser: There are many uncertainties about September 11th. Politicians, members of the academia and citizens can all claim to explain what really happened. I think that it is important to continue asking questions. It is an event that no one can forget; everybody remembers where he/she was at that precise moment. It is unbelievable that five years later, we still cannot see clearly what happened.

Silvia Cattori: It is almost as if none of the structures created wanted to doubt the official version. Is it possible that they let themselves be manipulated by the lack of information organized by the ones who organize the strategy of the tension and the False flags?

Daniele Ganser: We are prone to manipulation if we are afraid. Afraid of losing the respect from the people that we love. We cannot go out of this spiral of violence and terror if we let the fear take over. It is normal to be afraid, but we must overtly talk about this fear and about the manipulations that generate it. Nobody can escape their consequences. This is even more serious when the politicians in charge react often under the effect of fear. One must find the strength to say: “Yes, I am afraid to know that these lies make people suffer; yes, I am afraid to think that there is less oil left; yes, I am afraid to think that this terrorism they talk about is the consequence of manipulations, but I will not let myself become intimidated.”

Silvia Cattori: Up to what extent do countries like Switzerland participate, right now, in this strategy of tension?

Daniele Ganser: I do not think there is any strategy of tension in Switzerland. This country does not know any terrorist attacks. But, it is true that, in Switzerland as everywhere else, the politicians are afraid of the US and its strong position, and they have a tendency to say to themselves: “They are good friends, we’d better not fight against them.”

Silvia Cattori: Doesn’t this way of thinking and of covering up the lies that arise from the strategy of tension make everyone an accomplice of the crimes that it causes? To start with the journalists and the political parties?

Daniele Ganser: I personally think that everyone - journalists, professors, politicians - must think about the implications of the strategy if tension and the false flag. Here we are, indeed, in presence of phenomena that escape from every kind of agreement. That is why, every time that there are terrorist attacks, we must ask questions and try to understand what that implies. It is only on the day that we officially admit that the false flags are a reality, that it will be possible for us to create a list of the false flags that took place in history and to agree upon what should be done. The subject that interests me is how to achieve peace. It is important to open a debate on the strategy of tension and to take cognizance of the fact that this is a very real phenomenon. Since as long as we do not recognize its existence, we cannot act. That is why it is important to explain what the strategy of tension truly means. And, once we have understood, we must not let fear and hatred against one group win. We must say to ourselves that it is not only one country that is involved in this; that it is not only the United States, Italy, Israel or the Iranians, but that it occurs everywhere. Even if certain countries participate in a more intensive way than others. We must understand, without blaming one country or one person. Fear and hatred do not help us to advance, they paralyse the debate. I see many accusations against the Unites States, against Israel and against great Britain, or alternatively against Iran and Syria. But the search for peace teaches us that one must not get lost in accusations based on nationalism, and that neither hatred nor fear are needed; that the most important thing is to explain the reality. And this comprehension will be beneficial for everybody.

Silvia Cattori: Why is your book about NATO’s secret armies published in English, translated into English, Turk, Slovenian and soon Greek, but it is not published in French?

Daniele Ganser: I haven’t found any publisher in France, yet. If any publisher happens to be interested in publishing my book, I will be very pleased to see it being issued in French.

Silvia Cattori is Swiss journalist.

Letter to the editor earns 81-year-old Pa. man a visit from Secret Service agents

AP
BETHLEHEM, Pa. (AP) -- An elderly man who wrote in a letter to the editor about Saddam Hussein's execution that "they hanged the wrong man" got a visit from Secret Service agents concerned he was threatening President Bush.

The letter by Dan Tilli, 81, was published in Monday's edition of The Express-Times of Easton, Pa. It ended with the line, "I still believe they hanged the wrong man."

Tilli said the statement was not a threat. "I didn't say who -- I could've meant (Osama) bin Laden," he said Friday.

Two Secret Service agents questioned Tilli at his Bethlehem apartment Thursday, briefly searching the place and taking pictures of him, he said.

The Secret Service confirmed the encounter. Bob Slama, special agent in charge of the Secret Service's Philadelphia office, said it was the agency's duty to investigate.

The agents almost immediately decided Tilli was not a threat, Slama said

"We have no further interest in Dan," he said.

Tilli said the agents appeared more relaxed when he dug out a scrapbook containing more than 200 letters that he has written over the years, almost all on political topics.

"He said, 'Keep writing, but just don't make no threats,"' Tilli said of one of the agents.

It wasn't Tilli's first run-in with the federal government over his letter writing. Two FBI agents from Allentown showed up at his home last year about a letter he wrote advocating a civil war to unseat Bush, he said.

Strike plunges Lebanon into chaos

Strike plunges Lebanon into chaos

Beirut is largely paralysed by barricades of burning tyres
Beirut protests
Thousands of Lebanese demonstrators have paralysed much of the country, barricading roads as part of a strike aimed at toppling the government.

Smoke billowed over Beirut as protesters burned tyres and flights in and out of the city were cancelled as roads to the airport were blocked.

The Hezbollah-led opposition called the strike as part of its drive to dislodge the government and hold new elections.

Pro-Western Lebanese leaders accuse strike leaders of staging a coup.

"What is happening is the furthest thing from democratic means," Christian leader Samir Geagea told al-Jazeera television. "This is direct terrorism to paralyse the country."

The prime minister has accepted the principle of a government of national unity... [but] it is not acceptable to be dictated to by the opposition
Sami Haddad
Economy minister

But an opposition Christian leader, Suleiman Franjieh, told Hezbollah's al-Manar television: "Our campaign will escalate day by day. As long as they won't listen to us, we will not let them rest."

Hezbollah, which is backed by Syria and Iran, has been campaigning since the beginning of December to replace the Western-backed cabinet with a government in which it would have a veto.

Its opposition movement includes some Druze and Christians, factions who also figure within the mainly Sunni Muslim, anti-Syrian government.

The strike comes at a particularly difficult time for the government. Potential donors are gathering on Thursday in Paris for a major aid conference to help get Lebanon back on its feet after last summer's Hezbollah-Israel war.

Little action

An eerie silence hung over city's commercial areas as many workers stayed at home, although correspondents said it was unclear whether this was in support of the strike or because they were simply unable to get to work.

The government had said it would do what was necessary to keep the roads open, but the BBC's Jim Muir says there has been little concerted action so far to do so.

At least 15 people have been wounded in scuffles between rival factions and demonstrators have vowed to keep up their protests until they achieve their aims.

United against Syria

The strike has raised tensions in a country which still bears the scars of the 1975-1990 civil war.

Hezbollah hopes the action will achieve what it has so far failed to attain through mass protests: the end of the government.

The Lebanese economy and trade minister, Sami Haddad, told the BBC that the government had accepted the principle of a national unity cabinet - but he said it would not be dictated to by the opposition.

But Prime Minister Fouad Siniora still enjoys strong support from his loose alliance of Sunni Muslims, Christians and Druze, who are united in their desire to rid the country of the influence of its powerful neighbour, Syria.

His government is also backed by some powerful outside players, including the US, France and Saudi Arabia.

The BBC's Middle East analyst Roger Hardy says their fear is that if Hezbollah were to succeed in toppling Mr Siniora's government, Iran's already growing influence in the region would only increase.

"Progressives" Whine About Hillary Bashing

Once again boiling it down to arguments about gender and the false left-right paradigm
infowars article
The announcement that Hillary Clinton is to run for President has rightfully worried many into debating the problems of political dynasties in America. Commentators have pointed out that should Hillary be elected it would mean America being under the control of either a Bush or a Clinton for a total of at least 32 years.

Some "progressives" out there, however, seem to believe that such a move would be...well, progressive.

In response to an LA Times opinion piece entitled Anyone but a Bush or a Clinton, Lefty website, the Daily Kos today hit back with a Sacchariney blurb about how it is "unfair" to suggest the people should not vote for Hillary because her last name is Clinton.

It goes on:
Hillary Clinton was on her own a capable, high-powered lawyer with nearly unlimited potential. She chose to partner herself with her husband, and worked with him to raise his profile and possibilities. Would those "she wouldn't be senator" folks be as comfortable if this was turned on its head: Bill Clinton would never have been president without a wife named Hillary. Would someone else have been so competent and supportive in fighting back against the scandals that plagued Bill's career long before he reached the White House? Would someone else have made the connections, raised the money, and been as effective in forging the coalitions that brought Bill up the political ladder?

Once again the crux of the issue is being woefully missed by the "progressives" who seem to become completely detached from any practical debate when the possibility of having a Democrat in office is raised, especially if that Democrat is a woman.

Yes, the Daily Kos is right, Hillary was complicit in everything Bill Clinton did to grease his way up the ladder, and that is just one reason why she shouldn't become President.

The piece then goes on to make a bizarre reference to Elizabeth Edwards, the wife of 2004 candidate John Edwards, and suggests he would never have run if it were not for her support for her man, thus revealing itself as a thinly veiled "Hillary's critics are just sexists" rant. The fact that it was reported that Edwards was picked by the elites in the Bilderberg group, seems to matter not.

If the Daily Kos really wants to be "progressive" it should stop continuously raising the gender issue and telling everyone that women are less powerful than men. Anyone in the right mind knows that some of the most powerful people on this planet are women.

One commenter throws in the opinion the Kos was searching to shape further down the page:

...It's sexist and whether she is your candidate or not, it sounds moronic to pretend she would not have been a senator if she had not married Bill Clinton. Indeed she may have gone further faster without him.

Indeed a cursory look at more comments from the piece shows just how a rational debate about the domination of the "chosen few" in politics can veer off course into a wildly irrelevant, sexism, left vs right or even rich vs poor argument:

... I think this posturing is a result of years of rightwing radio and TV assault on the Clintons. People are prepared to not vote Dem if she wins? This reminds of the same bullshit that was happening with Nader before the 2000 election. It's the same tired right wing "Clinton fatigue" & "everyone hates the Clintons" garbage.

Hillary is financed by and parties with the "rightwing" media

...This has been paraded out ad nauseam for months now, and is a comment in almost every diary that has anything to do with Hillary. Its wrong. Just because there were two GOP Presidents in the past two decades who are from the same family is no reason to "decide" upfront that a Democratic candidate is not worthy of the office because she is related to a past President.

The Bushes and the Clintons are peas from the same pod

...that's just a ridiculous comparison. Bill Clinton came from a poor (maybe not dirt poor but compared to the Bush's, poor for sure!) family and worked hard for everything he achieved. He knows what it's like to be middle-class, working-class. Nothing guaranteed him the presidency except his own hard-work and political talent. And odds are, he would not have become president were it not for Hillary. I would also suggest that it is very likely that Hillary would have been able to run and win for Senate if she were just Hillary Rodham.

Clinton and the Bushes personally worked together to profit from massive drug smuggling operations through Mena , while Clinton was Governor of Arkansas. His "hard work" consisted of proving to the elite that he could lick boots and roll over as good as anyone else. This is not about rich vs poor and any notion that Bill Clinton represents the working classes is laughable. He passed virtually all the Republican globalist agenda in the early nineties signing onto NAFTA and the WTO.

What has Clinton ever done for the poorer people of America? He signed the welfare reform Personal Responsibility Act, which forced millions of working class people off welfare. Not so bad in itself, but when you consider that the jobs available to them were purely extremely low wage and slave labor work, it becomes a different matter. It was EARLY into Clinton's second term in office that the manufacturing jobs decline started. Manufacturing employment alone has fallen 3.3 million (19 percent) from its March 1998 peak under Clinton. This trend is simply continuing under Bush as more and more jobs are being exported.
...I reject the idea that two Clinton presidencies make a monarchy and I severely reject ANY comparison of Hillary to G-Dub.

Hilary voted for the war in Iraq

Hillary voted for the renewal of the PATRIOT ACT
Hillary has publicly voiced support for warrantless spying
Hillary has publicly voiced support for torture policies
...Although she can be seen as "friendly" to big business, she is not a corporatist and does not have a record of favoring the wealthy over the working person. That is simply not her record in the Senate.

Hillary is the ultimate elitist and represents the Democrats supposed base, the poor and downtrodden, about as much as Lindsay Lohan represents grace and dignity. She was sure to inform the likes of David Rockefeller and Queen Beatrix of the Netherlands as to her presidential aspirations during her visit to last year's Bilderberg conference in Ottawa Canada.
...I suspect Hillary is why you want the law [to bar consecutive family members as Presidents]. To bar a scary smart, effective liberal from running for president. Talk about abuse of power.

And it makes no sense, though the republicans would love you for it. Also anti-american...in the america where we're valued for our individuality and have the (theoretical) freedom to run for office as we wish to. Barring anyone from trying to gain public office based on arbitrary characteristics is patenly offensive.
How is it valuing individuality to have the same two families in office for three decades? Freedom can never be "theoretical" as this "progressive" states.

These two families are desperate attention loving power mad elitists and want to retain control of their respective political parties. They are using each other to ‘soften' their disapproval in the opposite party. We have two simultaneous dynasties - the Bushes and the Clintons. The Bushes are the hand of the Republican arm and the Clintons the hand of the Democratic arm. The body is of course controlled by one mind that outranks them all, the corporate fascist elite.

It is time to stop missing the point of this debate. Though we are hardly likely to see a rational debate about Hillary from supposedly "anti-war" websites such as the Daily Kos, Crooks and Liars and Raw Story, who are all now running Hillary ads, paid for by her campaign.

The Clintons and the Bushes (or the Bushtons as I shall call them from now on) are comparable to the Lucchese and Genovese families: they have their little spats, but at the end of the day they eat their gnocchi from the same table. The Democans and the Republicrats are the left and right hands of a single body. The mind of this body is intent on bare handedly tearing apart freedom and ripping to shreds the constitutional form of governance that was created to bring down this elitist rabble.

Perle: Bush Will Green Light Iran Attack

ADE Article
Richard Perle, more accurately referred to by his moniker, the Prince of Darkness, tells us from Herzliya, Israel, that Bush will eventually give the order to kill Iranians.

“If all options were exhausted in the attempt to stop the Iranian nuclear project, and US military involvement was needed for a successful strike on Tehran, US President George Bush would give the green light for the operation, former director of the US Defense Policy Board Advisory Committee, Richard Perle, told the Herzliya Conference on Sunday evening,” reports Yedioth Internet.

Perle may fool a few Israelis, even more than a few Americans, those who bother to notice, but for the rest of us, those who have followed this gang of criminals for nearly five years, he is simply blowing smoke out of a certain orifice.

Asked if Bush and the neocons would “do it,” that is engage in mass murder, Perle responded, “I think that until the day he leaves office, this is a president that, if he is told, ‘Mr. President, you are at the point of no return,’ I have very little doubt that this president would order the necessary military action.”

The Prince of Darkness would have us believe the “point of no return” is Iran armed to the teeth with nukes, a demonstrable fairy tale. In fact, Bush’s “point of no return” is the day he leaves office, failing to accomplish the neocon plan of sowing ruin and chaos in the Middle East.

“Perle expressed astonishment at the lack of support granted by the West to Iranian opposition movements who wish to overthrow the regime of the Ayatollahs,” the Israeli news site continues. “I’m not convinced that we have a lot of time. Given the peril that would result, its astonishing to me that we do not now have a serious political strategy with Iran…. If we continue on our current course, we have only a military option. So what I’m urging, and this should have happened a very long time ago, is that we make a serious effort to work with the internal (Iranian) opposition.”

Of course, for Perle, the Israel First neocons, and the Likudniks in Israel, the idea of subverting an Islamic government from within is natural as rain. Indeed, Israel has messed with its neighbors since the Zionists state was established—after running off a large number of Palestinian Arabs and stealing their land—a historical fact evinced by the Lavon Affair, the Mossad’s framing of Libya for the LaBelle Disco bombing, the attack on the USS Liberty, killing 34 Americans and wounding 171, the botched assassination of U.S. ambassador John Gunther Dean in Lebanon, and Israel’s connection to the Abu Nidal Organization, to name a few.

As well, the CIA and Pentagon are no strangers to attacking, subverting, undermining and overthrowing governments, as they have a long and sordid track record beginning in the late 1940s, following up on more than a hundred years of interventions, from the Philippines in 1899 to Honduras, Panama, Guatemala, China, Mexico, Dominican Republic, Colombia, Nicaragua, Venezuela, Haiti, even the Soviet Union near Vladivostok during the Bolshevik revolution, right up to the present day.

Naturally, Perle understands full well any effort to “work with the internal opposition” in Iran is doomed to failure, as this opposition consists basically of the son of the late Shah, Reza Pahlavi, who lives in exile in Virginia, and a scattering of other groups, including Mojahedin-e-Khalq, a terrorist organization involved in killing Iranian civilians. Perle actually expects us to believe the people of Iran will support the butchers of MEK or reinstall a monarch, the son of a dictator who unleashed SAVAK, a particularly brutal secret police, on the people of Iran for over three decades.

In fact, Perle and the neocons are impatiently waiting for Bush to attack Iran, as their plan is to destroy Iranian society, not free the Iranian people from the mullahs. Perle, like a demented carnival barker, is setting the stage, telling us Bush will “do it,” when it fact the neocons will, as Bush is little more than a trained monkey from an elite family that made its way in the world after rubbing elbows with Nazis.

BBC NEWS | FBI workers saw Guantanamo abuse

BBC NEWS Americas FBI workers saw Guantanamo abuse

An internal report by the FBI has catalogued a long list of abuses of prisoners held at the US detention centre in Guantanamo Bay in Cuba.
At least 26 agency employees say they witnessed inmates being mistreated and subjected to harsh interrogation.

One reported seeing a man whose head was covered in duct tape, another saw detainees chained from hand to foot in the foetal position for up to 24 hours.

The report was released to a US civil liberties group fighting a law suit.

A federal judge has yet to decide whether to accept the suit, filed by the American Civil Liberties Union (Aclu) against former Defence Secretary Donald Rumsfeld and others on behalf of former inmates who say they were abused.

A Pentagon spokesman said the department had a clear policy: "We treat detainees humanely. The United States operates safe, humane and professional detention operations for enemy combatants who are providing valuable information in the war on terror."

Nonetheless, the BBC's Jonathan Beale says the report appears to clearly contradict such assurances, which have also been made by President George W Bush.

'Not new'

In 2004, the FBI asked 493 employees whether they had witnessed aggressive treatment that was not in line with agency policies.

It says it received 26 witness statements detailing abuse that included:

Rooms kept so hot that a detainee was rendered almost unconscious, with a pile of hair next to him that he apparently pulled out
Detainees left for over 24 hours chained to the floor hand and foot in foetal position, with no chair, food or water - most urinated or defecated on themselves
Sleep deprivation interviews with strobe lights and loud music, apparently lasting up to 4 days
A detainee brought into an interview room appearing to have broken fingers and facial injuries
A detainee gagged with duct tape that covered much of his head after reportedly chanting the Koran non-stop
A detainee draped in an Israeli flag in a room with loud music and strobe lights
Many of the allegations are already in the public domain, the FBI said, while stressing that its own personnel were not involved.

The agency's report added that some officials had told FBI agents that the interrogation techniques had been approved at the defence department by officials who included Mr Rumsfeld.

The report does not amount to a criminal investigation, and all the information has been passed on to the Pentagon's inspector general, the FBI said.

It was made in response to a freedom of information request by the Aclu, which has already obtained a number of documented abuse allegations in this manner.

Wired to report US unwittingly evolved superpathogen in Iraqi combat hospitals

RAW STORY

A drug-resistant bacteria that is infecting wounded US soldiers in Iraq -- and has spread to civilian hospitals in parts of Europe -- accidentally evolved in US military hospitals in Iraq, Wired Magazine will report in a massive expose on Monday, RAW STORY has learned.

The several thousand word expose is set to bring uncomfortable new light to the bacteria Acinetobacter baumannii that Pentagon officials previously said was likely a product of Iraqi soil.

"By creating the most heroic and efficient means of saving lives in the history of warfare, the Pentagon had accidentally invented a machine for accelerating bacterial evolution and was airlifting the pathogens halfway around the world," the magazine reveals.

The story will go live online early Monday, newsroom sources say, and appear in February's print edition.

BBC NEWS | Europe | Europe sets up CIA prison inquiry

BBC NEWS - Europe sets up CIA prison inquiry

The European Parliament is setting up a committee to investigate claims that the CIA has been transporting suspects to secret prisons in Europe.
The US has come under pressure over allegations that the CIA ran secret jails for terror suspects abroad and flew some through European airports.

The committee's inquiry will run alongside the investigation by human rights watchdog the Council of Europe.

The 46 members of the new committee are set to be announced on Thursday.

Their mandate will include analysing:

Whether the CIA has carried out abductions, "extraordinary rendition", detentions at secret sites, torture, inhuman or degrading treatment of prisoners on EU territory or flown prisoners through, to or from member states

Whether such actions violated human rights treaties

Whether there have been detentions of citizens from EU states or candidate countries

Whether EU member states or institutions have been involved in the illegal deprivation of the liberty of individuals.
If any evidence of involvement is found, the parliament could open sanctions proceedings that could lead to the loss of EU voting rights.

Human Rights Watch has said it has circumstantial evidence suggesting that the CIA transported suspects captured in Afghanistan to Poland and Romania - both of which have denied the claims.

Germany denied any role in the abduction of its national Khaled al-Masri, who says he was seized by US intelligence agents in 2003 and taken to Afghanistan, where he was held for five months and mistreated.

US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice has said Washington would never condone torture, without categorically denying that some terror suspects were transported through or held in Europe.

The committee's first interim report is due in four months' time.

BBC NEWS CIA role claim in Kennedy killing

New video and photographic evidence that puts three senior CIA operatives at the scene of Robert Kennedy's assassination has been brought to light.

The evidence was shown in a report by Shane O'Sullivan, broadcast on BBC Newsnight.

It reveals that the operatives and four unidentified associates were at the Ambassador Hotel, Los Angeles in the moments before and after the shooting on 5 June, 1968.

The CIA had no domestic jurisdiction and some of the officers were based in South-East Asia at the time, with no reason to be in Los Angeles.

'Decoy'

Kennedy had just won the California Democratic primary on an anti-War ticket and was set to challenge Nixon for the White House when he was shot in a kitchen pantry.

THE CIA CONNECTION

A 24-year-old Palestinian, Sirhan Sirhan, was arrested as the lone assassin and notebooks at his house seemed to incriminate him.
However, even under hypnosis, he has never been able to remember the shooting and defence psychiatrists concluded he was in a trance at the time.

Witnesses placed Sirhan's gun several feet in front of Kennedy but the autopsy showed the fatal shot came from one inch behind.

Dr Herbert Spiegel, a world authority on hypnosis at Columbia University, believes Sirhan may have been hypnotically programmed to act as a decoy for the real assassin.

Evidence

The report is the result of a three-year investigation by filmmaker Shane O'Sullivan. He reveals new video and photographs showing three senior CIA operatives at the hotel.

What were they doing there? It's our obligation as friends of Bob Kennedy to investigate this
Paul Schrade

Three of these men have been positively identified as senior officers who worked together in 1963 at JMWAVE, the CIA's Miami base for its Secret War on Castro.
David Morales was Chief of Operations and once told friends:

"I was in Dallas when we got the son of a bitch and I was in Los Angeles when we got the little bastard."

Gordon Campbell was Chief of Maritime Operations and George Joannides was Chief of Psychological Warfare Operations.

Joannides was called out of retirement in 1978 to act as the CIA liaison to the Congressional investigation into the JFK assassination. Now, we see him at the Ambassador Hotel the night a second Kennedy is assassinated.

Memory

Monday, 20 November would have been Bobby Kennedy's 81st birthday. In Los Angeles, his son Max has just broken ground on a new high-school project in memory of his father on the old Ambassador Hotel site.
Paul Schrade, a key figure behind the school project, was walking behind Robert Kennedy that night and was shot in the head. He believes this new evidence merits fresh investigation:

"It seems very strange to me that these guys would be at a Kennedy celebration. What were they doing there? And why were they there? It's our obligation as friends of Bob Kennedy to investigate this."

Ed Lopez, a former Congressional investigator who worked with Joannides in 1978, says:

"I think the key people at the CIA need to go back to anybody who might have been around back then, bring them in and interview them, and ask - is this Gordon Campbell? Is this George Joannides?"

This report was shown on Newsnight on Monday, 20 November, 2006.

MP says Iran bars 38 U.N. atomic inspectors: agency

MP says Iran bars 38 U.N. atomic inspectors: agency

Mon Jan 22, 2007 8:27 AM ET
By Edmund Blair

TEHRAN (Reuters) - Iran has barred 38 inspectors from the U.N. nuclear watchdog, the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), from entering the country, an Iranian politician was quoted by Iran's ISNA news agency on Monday as saying.
The agency said the move was a "first step" in limiting cooperation with the IAEA, in line with a demand made by parliament after U.N. sanctions were imposed on Iran a month ago over its disputed nuclear program.
IAEA inspectors make routine checks of Iran's nuclear sites. Last year Iran, retaliating for growing Western pressure on it to halt nuclear activity, temporarily denied visas to some inspectors and curtailed the frequency of visits to facilities by inspectors already in the country.
The West accuses Iran of seeking to build atom bombs, while Tehran insists it aims to generate electricity.
"Iran has decided not to give entry permission to 38 inspectors from the IAEA and has announced this limitation to the IAEA officially," the head of parliament's Foreign Affairs and National Security Commission, Alaeddin Boroujerdi, said.
"The nationality of those who were barred is not the main basis for us," he told ISNA, without giving any further details.
Iranian government officials were not immediately available for comment. They had said earlier Tehran would continue basic cooperation with IAEA inspections and had no intention to quit the nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty over the new sanctions.
IAEA officials said they were checking the report.
EFFECT ON IAEA MONITORING UNCLEAR
It was not clear whether the reported curbs on inspectors might handicap the IAEA's monitoring of Iran's Natanz enrichment plant, where Tehran plans soon to increase fuel production to "industrial scale" from the current experimental operation.
Asked about the report, a senior diplomat familiar with IAEA operations told Reuters, "There is not much of a drama here", but declined further comment.
Diplomats in Vienna, where the IAEA is based, said Iran had the right to reject any inspector it wanted and that such a step was not prohibited by its safeguards accord with IAEA. They said other IAEA member states had barred inspectors in the past.
The U.N. sanctions imposed on December 23 ban transfers of sensitive materials and know-how to Iran's nuclear and missile programs over its refusal to stop enriching uranium, a process that can yield fuel for power stations or material for bombs.
In response, Iran's parliament passed a bill obliging the government to revise its cooperation level with the IAEA.
ISNA described the move announced on Monday as "a first step to limit Iran's cooperation with the IAEA".
Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad was defiant in a speech to parliament on Sunday, saying the U.N. resolution against Tehran would not affect Iran's nuclear policies "even if they issue 10 more of such resolutions".
Ahmadinejad's firebrand rhetoric has drawn increasing public criticism from his Iranian opponents, particularly since the resolution was passed.
His critics say his anti-Western slogans are driving the country needlessly toward an economically damaging confrontation with world powers and diplomatic isolation.
The president does not have the final say in state matters in the Islamic Republic. This is held by Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.
